Whew, it’s only Wednesday and what a week it has been! Tuesday’s field trip to Walt Disney was a blast! It was an entire day outside playing games and running around on a perfect October day. We rode a school bus that was new for some friends and they were so excited to experience something new and different. At Walt Disney we played on a new play structure with kids from other schools. Games that were set up were: basketball, balancing on blocks, agility course, running between cones with a ball, ribbon dancing and jumping, kicking a soccer ball into a goal, hitting a baseball off a T and running around the bases. There was also an awesome bowling set that was tons more fun than the bowling set that I have in the classroom. Our class seemed to really thrive being outside all day, if possible I would recommend taking our child outside to run and move. Not all learning needs to take place inside, or inside a classroom. Learning can and should happen everywhere and in every environment, it’s important for our kids to learn to generalize the skills that they learn in the classroom to their everyday life. Math skills (colors, shapes, numbers), language (what, who, where, labeling), and motor skills can all be addressed when outside. If you do not have a yard where you live there are other alternatives. Your apartment complex might have a play structure or there are lots of local parks in beautiful San Ramon.
Ok the not so fun part---attendance. If your child will not be attending school for any reason you must call the attendance hotline, 925-803-3199. I greatly appreciate you letting me know when your child will not be coming to school. However, an e-mail to me does not clear or excuse the absence with the office. I am required to take attendance daily and when I mark your child is absent an automated call will go out asking you to call back the office. Along these lines, if you are dropping your child off after 8:15, or Tuesdays after 8:35 you need to go to the front office to get a tardy slip. The front office is not close to our classroom. I suggest parking in the upper parking lot, getting a tardy slip, jumping back into the car to come back down to the lower parking lot. Then knock on the K-1 door to drop off your child. I apologize for any inconvenience. If you have questions regarding the attendance policy please address those concerns to the office.
